Meristematic tissue is the dividing tissue or the tissue which leads to the growth of the plant. There are three types of meristematic tissues:

  • Apical Meristem: Increase the length of root and shoot tips.
  • Intercalary Meristem: Increases the length between inter nodes or between leaves.
  • Lateral Meristem: Increases the girth or thickness of plant.

Meristematic tissue gives rise to simple tissues and complex tissues through differentiation. Hence, if meristematic tissue was not present then all these above listed functions won't happen.
