In March 1859, thousands of ryots in Bengal refused to grow indigo. This was known as the 'Blue rebellion'. The farmers refused to pay rent to the planters. They attacked the indigo factories with weapons and their womenfolk attacked with pots and pans.

Happening after the Blue Rebellion:

1. Government setup the Indigo Commission which held the planters guilty. Commission asked the ryots to fulfil their existing contracts but also told them that they could refuse to produce indigo in future.

2. The government became worried and brought in the military to protect the planters from assault.

3. After the revolt, indigo production came down in Bengal.

4. The planters now shifted their operation to Bihar.

5. With the discovery of synthetic dyes in the late 19th century, their business was severely affected.

6. Even then they managed to increase production.

7. On the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa, a peasant from Bihar persuaded him to visit Champaran. He requested him to see the plight of the indigo cultivators there.

8. Mahatma Gandhi's visit in 1917 marked the beginning of the Champaran movement against the indigo planters.
