What happened to the three friends 'ideas of having a bathe in the river? what was the writer experience.

The three men had planned the previous night that they would get up early in the morning, get rid of their rugs and shawls, and spring into the river with a joyous shout, and revel in a long delicious swim. However, the next morning, after looking at the cold and damp water, George and Harris decide against the swim. But, not ready to give in, the writer takes a plunge in the water. However, he doesn’t relish the plunge.  Thinking about the cold water and snags and weeds in the water, he decides to go down to the edge and just throw water over himself. He takes a towel and creeps out on the bank and worms his way along on to the branch of a tree that dips down into the water. Bitten by the cold on the way, he decides to even give up throwing water over himself. However, as fate would have it, just when he turns to go back into the boat and dress up, the branch breaks, and he falls in the water, getting fully drenched.
