When the ovum is fertilized the corpus luteum secreates progenstrone and estrogen to maintain pregnency

If not fertilized then corpus luteum degenerates in ovary itself

It is formed in the presence of lutinizing hormone

Hope it helps

hello there!!

if fertilization does not occur the corpus luteum degenerates after about 9 days and changes into corpus albicans which doesn't secrete any hormones

if fertilization occurs
the corpus luteum persists for 9 months(with the help of HCG hormone) and secretes progesterone which is necessary for pregnancy.
