What happens when carbon disulphide is added to the mixture of iron fillings and sulphur and their compound iron sulphide?
Answer in both cases

  • Adding ‘carbon disulphide’ to the mixture of comprising “iron fillings and sulphur powder” results in a ‘clear yellow solution’ when sulphur powder is dissolved in carbon disulphide on mild shaking.
  • Iron fillings in the bottom are insoluble.
  • Through filtration these can be segregated. When the solution can evaporate, strong sulphur powder is acquired.
  • In this practical we did not get a iron but we can get sulphur as a sulphur powder.
