If the current flows in that coil, it is equivalent to a bar magnet kept at the centre perpendicularly(I.e., perpendicular to the diameter of the coil).

So, in the same way, when a cuurent carrying coil is kept in a magnetic field, three orientations are possible.

When the coil is kept parallel to the field i.e., the area vector(vector associated with the area;perpendicular to the area) of the coil is kept parallel or antiparallel to the field.
When the coil is kept perpendicular to the field(two two different orientations are possible here;think about it).
In case 1, it is like a bar magnet kept along the field.

In case 2, it is like the bar magnet kept perpendicular to the field(for two different orientation).

The torque experienced by a magnet is MBsin theta where theta is the angle between the magnetic moment vector of the magnet M and magnetic field vector B.

For case 1, theta is zero. So torque experienced by the magnet is zero.

For case 2, theta is 90 degrees(for two different orientations). So, torque is not zero and hence it rotates and aligns itself as in case one.

This is what happens.
