When phenol reacts with FeCl_3 a violet complex is formed with (HCl) Hydrochloric acid.

FeCl_3 + 3PhOH ----> Fe(O-Ph)3

phenol compounds C6H50H neutral Fecl3 compound reacts as follows

6C6H5OH+Fecl3=h3(FE(OC6H5)6)+3HCl

6C6H5OH+Fecl3=h3(FE(OC6H5)6)+3HClwe get a product of purple colour including hydrochloric acid.
