If he'd never fought kaliga it would be thinking that he wouldn't have accepted buddhism but according to me ashoka wanted to win whole India and rule it and kaling was only nation they haven't won so it was comming in way of his mission....and if it would have happened later or sooner he would UNDERSTAND the pain of his countrymen....later or sooner it meant the same consequences...

Kalinga was the only independent state that Ashoka could not conquer. He waged a war against the ruler of Kalinga. So the great Kalinga war was fought which moved Ashoka's heart. Both sides suffered losses but Kalinga suffered the most. Ashoka went to the battle field and the sight of the soldiers lying dead and wounded, widows and orphans moved Ashoka. So war was declared off and the concept of Dhammagosha was adopted.
