Well, yes, you would achieve harmony…but not for the reason you are stating.
You see, in order to accomplish what you have proposed, we would first have to find some way to exercise mind control over all of humanity, and make everyone think/believe only what we want them to. And, given that we had that power, “harmony” would most definitely be a result…because we would be able to control them, and prevent anyone from disagreeing or causing conflict.
Personally, I think that such a world would be far, far worse than what we have now.
“But just as a hypothetical, what if we could do that, without controlling everyone’s minds…we could just get everyone to agree with each other.”
Then, in my opinion, that would be the end of society, for all intents and purposes. With everyone thinking the same, we would have no new ideas whatsoever. And when new situations arose, that we had not met before, we would be incapable of dealing with them.
Why?
Because creativity requires conflict…it requires people with different ideas, in competition with each other. You arguing for your ideas, me arguing for mine. Which inevitably causes disharmony and conflict.
And new situations would inevitably require many different ideas as to how to handle that. Some would be good ideas, many would be bad ideas, but that process is necessary to find what is the best solution to any given situation. Again, this is impossible to accomplish without conflict, without disagreement, etc. Take that away, and you’re left with a society that may be ‘harmonious’, but one that will also, ultimately, be entirely unable to cope or survive long term.
The problem here is that you are assuming that conflict is a negative thing. It isn’t. Virtually every major advancement in society has come through conflict. Science, for example, has a long, wonderful history of people saying, “Hey, no, I think you’re wrong, and I’m going to prove it!”
The problem is not with conflict, or disagreement, or diversity. The problem is with extremes. Having many different religions coexisting together is not implicitly dangerous, there are many places in our world where different religions coexist quite peacefully. The problem is when religious extremists arise.
Likewise, the problem is not with race, or culture, or politics, or any other such things. Choose any of those categories, and I will show you places where diversity exists, without major conflict. It is only when extremism and intolerance enter the picture that you start having real problems.
And the best thing about this realization? The way that you stated it, it gives us a ‘solution’ that is not only impossible, but that would be disastrous if it were possible. Whereas my suggestion — to decrease extremism of all kinds, and promote a more rational diversity, is not only possible, but makes our world a better place.
