10% Law:

The 10% Rule means that when energy is passed in an ecosystem from one trophic level to the next, only ten percent of the energy will be passed on. A trophic level is the position of an organism in a food chain or energy pyramid.

Example:

When a carnivore or an omnivore consumes that animal, only about 10% of energy is fixed in its flesh for the higher level. For example, the Sun releases 1000 J of energy, then plants take only 10 J of energy from sunlight; thereafter, a deer would take 1 J from the plant. A wolf eating the deer would only take 0.1 J.
