Lens : A lens is a part of a transparent refracting medium bound by two surfaces, with at least  one of the two surfaces being a curved one.The curved surface may be spherical or cylindrical.

Basically there are two types of lens Concave and Convex lens. 

Convex Lens : These lens are thicker at the middle  and are also known as converging lens.
Images formed by convex lens may be real or virtual, inverted or erect, smaller,larger or equal to size of the object.

These are used in eye glasses,microscopes,projectors etc.,

First of all you should understand what is LENS ?
LENS :- lens is a transparent optical device which is used to converge or diverge transmitted light and to form images .

There are many type of lenses but two lenses are most important e.g
(1) concave lens (2) convex lens

convex lens :- A lens which middle part thicker than edge part .

you can see in figure .

convex lens also known as CONVERGING lens . because when parallel light rays strike the surface of convex lens , light rays converge a fixed point in parallel axis . e.g focus .
