Field fallowing is one of the most important activities of the agricultural system.

In this fallowing activity ,the farmers do not harvest in a particular land for one or more years.

This helps to regain the natural fertility and nutrients of that harvesting land which was lost due to continuous harvesting.

This fallowing process is performed from the ancient times.

A fallow field or a field fallow is a piece of land that the farmer cultivates for some years and then lets it stay idle for a number of seasons for the field to improve its fertility.

Explanation:

  • A piece of land has limited fertility to it in forms of nutrients. When crops are grown such nutrients get depleted and on repeated cycles of farming the land gradually loses its fertility completely.
  • To help the land gain back from the natural resources and from natural processes, often farmers leave the land idle for a couple of seasons.
  • The land gradually gains back its nutrients and fertility and becomes ready for the next season of farming.
