Coal is a fossil fuel which was formed due to subjection of plant tissues under high pressure and temperature while petroleum is obtained from the remains of animals between sedimentary rocks. They are non renewable sources of energy.

A fuel is a substance which on burning produces usable energy. Ex wood coal petrol diesel kerosene CNG LPG. ,etc

Fuels are the substances that provide us energy on burning. Coal, petroleum, LPG, etc are some common fuels. Each fuel has different characteristics. These characteristics grade them as good, very good or poor fuels. Different fuels are selected for different activities. Sucha as petrol is used for transport, LPG and kerosene for cooking, coal and petrochemicals to generate electricity, etc.

Types of Fuels :-

Fuels may be classified on the basis of their physical state. So, fuels are of three types :

1. Solid fuels such as wood, coal, cowdung, etc.

2. Liquid fuels such as petrol, kerosene, diesel, oil, etc.

3. Gaseous fuels such as hydrogen, methane, LPG, CNG, biogas, water gas, producer gas, etc.
