Most reactions of oxygen involves oxidation reaction. For in stance the reaction of oxygen with metals such as sodium, lithium, potassium, alluminium among other metals with oxygen leads to the formation of metal oxides. The metal oxides are generally basic in nature and that of non-metals, the oxides are acidic in nature.

So a reaction of which involves the joining of an element with oxygen we can take for example the reaction of metals of group II with oxygen. e.g

2Mg(s) + O2 (g) ⇒2MgO(s)
