Buddhist stupas were originally built to house the earthly remains of the historical Buddha and his associates and are almost invariably found at sites sacred to Buddhism.

The Great Stupa at Sanchi is oneof the oldest stone structures in India, and an important monument of Indian Architecture. It was originally commissioned by the emperor Ashoka
