This question is from the poem 'A Tiger in the Zoo' by Leslie Norris.
Collins English Dictionary defines 'water hole' as 'In a desert or other dry area, a water hole is a pool of water where animals can drink.'
According to the poet, the tiger should be lurking in the shadow of the long grass near the water hole in order to prey on the deer who come to the water body to have their fill of water.
