Acids are substances having a sour taste. The word acid comes from a Latin word acere , which means sour. Acids are corrosive and react with bases to form salt and water. Also, acid turn blue litmus paper red. For example hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulphuric acid (H2SO4) are acids.

Bases are defined as chemical substances which are bitter to taste and soapy to touch. They react with acids to form salts and turn red litmus paper blue. For example sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] etc.

· In chemistry, acids and bases have been defined differently by three sets of theories. One is the Arrhenius definition, which revolves around the idea that acids are substances that ionize (break off) in an aqueous solution to produce hydrogen (H+) ions while bases produce hydroxide (OH-) ions in solution
