Living organisms use energy released by respiration for their life processes. There are two types of respiration – aerobic (which needs oxygen) and anaerobic (which doesn't need oxygen)

Cellular respiration is what cells do to break up sugars to get energy they can use. ... Aerobic respiration, the process that does use oxygen, produces much more energy and doesn't produce lactic acid. It also produces carbon dioxide as a waste product, which then enters the circulatory system.

Anaerobic respiration is respiration using electron acceptors other than molecular oxygen. Although oxygen is not the final electron acceptor, the process still uses a respiratory electron transport chain.
