An allele is an alternative form of a gene (one member of a pair) that is located at a specific position on a specific chromosome. These DNA codings determine distinct traits that can be passed on from parents to offspring. The process by which alleles are transmitted was discovered by Gregor Mendel and formulated in what is known as Mendel's law of segregation.
There are two types of alleles:
1) Recessive alleles are the allele that are expressed only when they are homozygous ( when both forms of the allele are same). Their expression is masked if dominant allele is present as in heterozygous condition.
2) Dominant alleles are the allele that are expressed in both homozygous and heterozygous conditions.
For example
TT- will be tall (homozygous and both alleles are dominant)
Tt - will be tall (heterozygous)
tt- will be short (homozygous and both alleles are recessive)
