To me it's not very useful. Yes, I get it that basically everything at the airport is more expensive than it would be elsewhere or online. Also, when I am at the airport in good time before my flight, I might as well sit down and eat something - as buying a meal inflight is usually equally - or even more expensive. I am glad for the opportunity to buy a phone charger or earplugs in case I forgot mine. Sometimes I buy souvenirs at the airport because I might not have stumbled upon a souvenir shop elsewhere, or I might have wanted to wait until I was sure what I could bring with me last minute, in terms of luggage.

Yes, filling an empty water bottle after customs works half of the times, but the other half of the times I am in countries where the bathroom water isn't drinkable, or where they only have lukewarm water coming out of the taps in the bathrooms. That's just gross.

Anyway, some of the reasons why I don't find this article useful.
