Answer:

Many colonies started as lines on a map, defined by geographical features and not by the people living within them. In other words, they could be a collection of different tribal groups who do not speak the same language, practice the same religion and were previously at war with one another.

Anti-colonial nationalism occurs where the diverse peoples in a colony come together (for example across tribal and other social boundaries) and decide that -

they have a common national identity; and

they can rule themselves better than their colonial masters.

By peaceful means or by revolution, they evict their colonial masters and set up their own independent state and government.

As Britain divested itself of its colonial empire after WW2, a lot of nationalism actually had to be manufactured by them, ie making the diverse peoples in a colony feel that they were part of the same nation. Not all of these efforts were successful, as evidenced by the civil wars and tribal power struggles which took place after these countries became independent (eg Biafra, Sri Lanka).
