Bats are mammals of the order Chiroptera. With their forelimbs adapted as wings, they are the only mammals capable of true and sustained flight. Bats are more manoeuvrable than birds, flying with their very long spread-out digits covered with a thin membrane or patagium.

Bats belong to the order Chiroptera, which is second only to order Rodentia (the rodent order) in number of species. If bats and rodents were classified together, they would make up about half of all mammal species! Chiroptera alone includes some 1,200 different types of bats.
