Atoms emit beta particles through a process known as beta decay. Beta particles are just electrons from the nucleus. A beta-decay occurs when there are too many protons or neutrons in a nucleus. It is a type of radioactive decay in which an electron is emitted. In the process, a neutron in the nucleus turns into a proton or vice-versa.

Hope this helps!

Beta decay:The radioactive decay in which high energy electrons are emittedfrom the nucleus of a radioactive atom is called beta decay. When a nucleus undergoes beta decay it transforms into a new nucleus after emitting a beta particle.Example:15P32--->16S32+-1e0-1e0is the beta particle of nuclear origin. In beta decay the atomic number of the new nucleus is more than the original nucleus but there is no change in mass number.
