Bibliography, as a discipline, is traditionally the academic study of books as physical, cultural objects; in this sense, it is also known as bibliology Carter and Barker (2010) describe bibliography as a twofold scholarly discipline—the organized listing of books (enumerative bibliography) and the systematic description of books as objects (descriptive bibliography).

Explanation:

Bibliography is a word used in science and, like many other words in European languages of science, it has Greek roots because ancient Greeks were first known European scholars. Bibliography literally means “description (or writing) of books”. Where and when is the word used in Russian and English?

When you are writing a research paper like your thesis, dissertation or course work or monograph or a research article for a journal or encyclopedia, to show that you know existing opinions on the subject or related topics such as methodology of research, you are expected to give at the end of your writing the list of books and articles you are referring to in your work for the reader to check your inferences from sources. You can refer to your own preceding research, too. In a popular science article or book you don't have to give inline citations to all the works you have read and whose research you are basing your work on, but just attach to the end of your own discourse a Further Reading list. That list and your sources of information will be the bibliography on the subject.

You need to compile a reading list for your research at the start of your work, look through the publications, select relevant ones to base upon and discuss and summarise your reading in the opening paragraphs of your research paper.
