A chitinous bristle found on the insects, arthropod or annelid worms which include earth worm. It is also like a seta in some organisms. The type of chaetae can vary from specie to specie. 

It helps these insects to travel underground by the means of waves of muscular contractions which alternately shorten and lengthen the body. The shortened part is anchored to the surrounding soil by tiny claw-like bristles which are chaetae set along its segmented length
