It is the process of passing electricity through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (known as brine). The products formed are Chlorine and sodium Hydroxide.

  • When current is passed through aqueous solution of salt gets dissociated and sodium hydroxide is produced. This is known as Chlor - alkali process because the products in this reaction are chlorine (chlore) and sodium hydroxide (base).

  •  2NaCl(aq) + 2H2O(l) → 2NaOH + Cl2(g) + H2(g)

  • All these products are very important and useful in industry. Chlorine and hydrogen are the by products of this process.
