Compound Words
Compound words are two different words formed into one word which represents a new meaning altogether different from their own individual meaning. For example, the word ‘toothbrush’ is a compound word made up of two independent words ‘tooth’ and ‘brush’.
There are three different types of compound words:
A) Closed Compound Words: Tow words joined to form a new word with new meaning. Examples are: firefly, softball, redhead, keyboard, makeup, notebook, etc.
B) Hyphenated Compound Words: Words joined by hyphens. Examples are: father-in-law, over-the-counter, seven-year-old, etc.
C) Open Compound Words: Two different words used together forming a new meaning. Examples are: post office, real estate, full moon, bus stand railway station, etc.Similar questions
