The area sheabed around a large land mass where the sea is realeatively shallow compared with open ocean the continental shelf is geologicially a part of continental crust.

Continental shelf:  A continental shelf is the shallow part of the the ocean that is essentially a continuation of the coast but under water. It is the shallowest part of the ocean near the coast. the ocean generally gets deeper as you move farther into the ocean particularly beyond the continental shelf.

It is a border zone between land and sea.

It is depth upto 200 meters.  

It occupies 7.6% of ocean area.
