Required Answer:

  • Corrosion is a natural process that converts a refined metal into a more chemically stable form such as oxide, hydroxide, or sulfide.

  • It is the gradual destruction of materials by chemical and/or electrochemical reaction with their environment.

Prevention Method:

  • The application of a paint coating is a cost-effective way of preventing corrosion.

  • Paint coatings act as a barrier to prevent the transfer of electrochemical charge from the corrosive solution to the metal underneath.

  • The metal is then heated which fuses the powder into a smooth unbroken film.

Answer: Corrosion is the process of deterioration of surface of metals over time, by various factors such as oxygen, water etc.

Methods for preventing corrosion :

1. Applying paint on the surface of metallic objects acts as a barrier between the metal and air, thus preventing oxidation of the metal.

2. For metals like Iron, the surface of the metal is coated with a layer of Zinc (Zn), which prevents the iron surface from being corroded for a long time. This process is called Galvanization.

3. Usually, to prevent corrosion, metals are combined with other metals to form alloys. Formation of alloys prevents corrosion and also enhances the properties of metals.

FUN FACT : Alloys are also called Solid Solutions !!
