By use, crops fall into six categories: food crops, for human consumption (e.g., wheat, potatoes); feed crops, for livestock consumption (e.g., oats, alfalfa); fibre crops, for cordage and textiles (e.g., cotton, hemp); oil crops, for consumption or industrial uses (e.g., cottonseed, corn); ornamental crops
• Crops are plants which are grown at a commercial scale for the purpose of consumption and trade.
• Crops are usually fruits, vegetables and cereals.
There are mainly 2 types of Crops :
>> Food Crops
>> Cash Crops
Food Crops : These crops are cultivated which are used as food by the animals. They are either sold or consumed by the producer.
Example :- Wheat, Rice etc.
Cash Crops : These Crops are produced for commercial purposes.
Example : Coffee, tobacco, cotton etc.
The crops are grouped according to the seasons they are grown.
>> Rabi Crops
>> Kharif Crops
Rabi Crops : They are winter Crops. Grown in October to March. They don't depend on monsoon and require irrigation.
Example :- Wheat, gram, barley, etc.
Kharif Crops : They are monsoon crops. Grown on July to October. They depend largely on monsoon.
Example :- Paddy, maize, groundnut etc.
• Crops as mentioned above, are basically the food items we need.
• They are the source of energy for us as we get energy form food.
• Crops play a vital role in the food web.
• Crops are autotrophs, and we known autotrophs are the ones who start the food web.
• Therefore, they are very important.
