difference between metals and non-metals:-

difference on the basis of physical properties :-

METALS:-

1) all metals are solid at room temperature except mercury, which is a liquid at room temperature.

2) all metals are lustrous.

3) metals have high densities except lithium, soduim and potassium.

4) metals are malleable (can be beaten into thin sheets).

5) metals are ductile (can be drwn into wires).

6) they are good conductors of heat and electricity.

7) they have high melting point.

NON-METALS :-

1) non-metals exists as solid, liquid and gas.
silicon is a solid, bromine is a liquid and oxygen is a gas.

2) non-metals are non-lustrous.

3) they have low density.

4) they are non-malleable.

5) they have low melying and boiling point.

6) they are poor conductors of heat and electricity.

7) they are non-ductile.

difference on the basis of chemical properties :-

METALS :-

1) Metals react with non-metals to form ionic compounds.
eg:- 2Na + Cl₂ → 2NaCl

2) metals combine with oxygen to form metal oxides which are basic in nature.
eg:-
2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO

NON-METALS:-

1) non-metals form covalent bonds.

2) non-metals dissolve in water to form acidic solutions.
eg:- SO₂ + H₂O → H₂SO₃

hope it helps..

Metals

1) metals are shiny in appearance.

2)metals are hard(except sodium and potassium).

3)metals are good conducters of electricity.

4)metals are sonorous.

5)most of the metals are good conducters of heat (except bismuth and tungsten).

Non-metals

1)non-metals are not shiny in appearance(except iodine and graphite).

2)solid non-metals are quite soft (except diamond).

3)non-metals are poor conducters of electricity (except graphite).

4)non-metals are non-sonorous.

5)non-metals are poor conducters of heat (except diamond).
