Example: he is sleeping. Here, the man is in sleep on that moment.
"Asleep" means a person/animal who/which is in sleep but the time is not mentioned. On other mean, it means sleeping process.
Like, She fall asleep for the witches curse.
Here asleep is used to refer sleep but the time span is missing here.
