There is a minor difference between a national anthem and a national song. A national anthem is that the anthem reflects the history and the culture of the country and everybody has to pay their respects to it by giving a standing ovation whenever the song is played. The national anthem represents a particular country. A national song is a song written for a country and does not bear that much of a significance as of the national anthem. It is not mandatory to sing the national song. For example, In India our national anthem is Jan Gan Man....and national song is Vande Matram...However, their are certain countries in the wrold wherein both are just the same or ony the national anthem exsist................ National anthem has to be sung in 53 seconds but national song can vary , difference between national song and national anthem till known is that song may be different as the time but from our freedom our national anthem is same that which is today . Our national anthem would be same in whole india and in each part it would be sung in a same way but national song can be different not totally but it may be vary as it like this that kar chale hum fida jano tan sathiyo, ye desh hai veer jawano ka and so on but on the name of national anthem each Indian would consider same name as "jan gan man " according to the Indian constitution India has many national songs. eg."sare jahan se accha","vande mataram"
etc. but there is only a single national anthem for our country eg; jan gan for India.

Second big difference is that we can sing national anthem at special moment in schools and at national days and songs can be sung anywhere anytime by sleeping or by doing something spl. but when national anthem is sung by any indian then person who is listening it, it is his/her duty to respect our national anthem.National Anthem has been defined as generally patriotic musical composition that is formally recognised by a country's government, and it expresses the popular feeling of the country. It is used in official ceremonies. Jana Gana Mana was adopted by the constituent Assembly as the National Anthem & Vande Mataram was given equal Honour by adopting it as the National Song.

Jana gana mana written by R.N. Tagore is our national Anthem and Bande mataram written by Bankim chandra chatterjee or chattopadhyaya is our national song. National song is also similar, one can just assume that it missed the bus.

A national anthem has some special privileges granted to it by the constitution/law, while a national song doesn't. For example singing the national anthem can be made compulsory but not the national song.
Every country has to have a song to be sung at official fuctions; it is known as National Anthem. In india it is 'Jan Gan Man......'. However, if a song has some historic value, and is also immensely popular; it may be termed as National Song, such as 'Vande Matram'. But, it has no official status.
