A DNA template is a single strand of

DNA that is used by the DNA polymerase enzyme as a basis of copying the DNA.

During the process of DNA replication the double stranded form of the DNA is split into two single stranded molecules.

Formations of DNA Template

DNA is made of chemical building blocks called nucleotides.

These building blocks are made of three parts:

  • A Phosphate Group,
  • A Sugar Group
  • One of four Types of Nitrogen Bases.

To form a strand of DNA, nucleotides are linked into chains, with the phosphate and sugar groups alternating.
