The Doctrine of Lapse was an annexation policy created by Lord Dalhousie (Governor-General for East India Company from 1848-1856).
According to the doctrine, any of the princely independent states of India would be annexed to the British Empire if they died without a natural born heir. The child couldn't be adopted or a girl.
Tanjore, Nagpur and Jhansi were annexed by this method.

Hope this helped
