What is an alimentary canal?

Answer:

Alimentary canal also known as digestive tract,is a long tubular structure measuring 9m ranging from mouth to anus.

•Alimentary canal consists of:

1. Mouth:The food is partially digested, the starch is reduced to simple sugars like maltose. This is done by salivary amylase

2. Oesophagus: The food is passed onto the stomach

3. Stomach: The food is acted upon by the gastric juice, which contains pepsin,HCl acid and mucus. Food is further digested and reduced. The body leaving stomach is known as chyle and alkaline in nature.

4. Small intestine: The process of digestion is completed here,it has wide network of blood vessels which transport the food material for energy and growth purposes

5. Large intestine: The water content from the undigested food is absorbed

6. Anus: Undigested food is eliminated from the body
