Answer:

nglish is an official languages in some countries, and there are many native speakers of English in India and Singapore, for example. They do speak different dialects than as found in England and America for example, but they are just as much native speakers of English as you or me. And for example, there are fewer native speakers, but still many fluent speakers and those with some basic English ability in Hong Kong, where English is also an official language.

In almost all Asian countries (and around the world) English is a major second language taught in schools, especially for economic reasons, but also for international communication with other non-English speaking countries. That usage has been called English as a Lingua Franca, especially for business purposes, and it isn’t about communication with English native speakers, but about using English to communicate with speakers of other languages. English is in this sense a language of the world, not just a language of a few countries where it is the main language. It’s very possible that English will remain an international language even if the United States, England, etc., lose political/economic/international power in the future. English is becoming decentralized and there are more second language speakers (about twice as many) as there are native speakers. Of course, for now, economic reasons are the main motivation for teaching English in Asian countries (and elsewhere).

As a tourist visiting Korea, Japan, China, Vietnam, the Phillipines, Indonesia and various other countries, if you do not speak their national language, then it is very likely that you will be best speaking English, even if it isn’t your native language. In Vietnam you might be able to use some French, in the Phillipines some Spanish, maybe even some Arabic in Indonesia, but even there English is widely known within the tourism industry, and that’s usually your best second option if you don’t speak the local language. Just as above I mentioned English as a Lingua Franca for business, this applies for tourism too. In Asia, there are more than a billion people, maybe almost 2 billion (I haven’t done any calculations about this, but just the populations of India and China are more than that) who do not speak English, or at least not very well, but also many who do, and there isn’t another language that will be more useful for international communication without learning each national language. (Note that within many countries there are lots of other languages spoken also, and some of them may speak only their native language and English, not the national English.) Even in North Korea, English is used for tourists.

From the local perspective, too, English is relevant and important. English is an indication of education and can lead to jobs in the tourism industry and also to an international education. So learning English in school is considered extremely valuable and a way to gain economic and other opportunities. That doesn’t mean that everyone likes English or wants to learn to speak it, but it is considered important. Similarly, Chinese and Japanese are becoming more and more important in international business, so Americans and others are learning these languages more today than ever before, for mostly economic reasons.

The difference between English and all of the languages of Asia is that English functions as an international language. Even though there are more native speakers of Chinese (over 1 billion), Chinese is not widely used (and therefore not very useful) in most other countries in Asia. You might find some Chinese speakers in Vietnam or Korea— you could even find Chinese speakers in the United States— but that won’t be the most useful for international travel or business because English is the working language of those industries, except when using the local language. So if you are interested in Asia in general, English will be more useful than learning any one of the national languages, but if you are interested in China specifically, for example, Chinese will be much more useful; it just won’t also help you very much with Japan, India or Malaysia.
