what is foramen ovale


eurusholmes003: Before birth, the major portion of the blood from the right side by-passes the pulmonary circulation through foramen ovale (as no air in the lungs).

At time of birth with the start of breathing, the bypass don't work. So foramen ovale closses to become fossa ovalis.

Foramen ovale is a small hole located in the interatrial septum. After the birth of the baby ,this hole closes.
But before the birth,baby doesn't use its lungs to get oxygenated blood..
