Friction is the resistance to motion of one object moving relative to another.

Ex.

  • Rubbing both hands together to create heat.
  • A sled sliding across snow or ice.
  • Skis sliding against snow.
  • A person sliding down a slide is an example of sliding friction.
  • A coaster sliding against a table.
  • A washing machine pushed along a floor.
  • An iron being pushed across material.

When two surfaces slide over one another or try to slide across each other then the force acting between them is called friction.

Friction always works in the direction opposite to the direction in which the object is moving, or trying to move.

Some examples of friction are as follows:

1) You have seen buses have tires with grooves such that the tire can grip the ground tight and the bus can move easily on the ground.

2) Friction produces heat therefore when we rub our palms it feels hot because friction produces heat.

Some uses of friction are as follows:

1) Because of friction we can walk on the ground, the grooves under our shoe holds the ground tight and prevents it from sliding also the ground surface is uneven therefore this enalbes us to walk on the ground else we would have fallen from the ground as many times we had tried to walk.

2) You can write with pen on paper because the grip between the nip of the pen and the surface of paper is tight otherwise the pen might slide over the paper.
