Herbaria (Sing.- Herbarium) :

  • It is a store house of collected plant specimens which are dried, compressed and preserved on sheets.
  • The arrangement of these sheets is done according to the universally accepted system of classification.
  • Specimens along descriptions on the herbarium sheets of a particular plant is a repository for future use.
  • The information about the plants is labelled at the base of the sheet.
  • The information includes : Date and place of collection, different names given to the plant (local/English), Botanical name of the plant, Family, Collector's name, etc.
  • There are two types of herbaria : Major (National) and Minor (Regional/Local/College/University)

Steps involved :

  • First of all, a part of a plant is collected and dried using a poison.
  • It is stitched, labelled and deposited.
  • It is stitched on a herbarium sheet.
  • The size of a herbarium sheet is 41×29 cm² or 16.5×11.5 inch².
  • The size of the label used to write the description of the plant is : 7×12 cm.
  • Fragmented packets are used for seeds, extra flowers or loose plant parts.

Some important herbaria of India includes -

  1. Herbaria of Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.
  2. Central National Herbarium, Calcutta.
  3. Herbaria of NBRI, Lucknow.
