Meiosis: The simple division in which a single cell splits or divides into two daughter cells is called meiosis. In it the number of chromosomes in both the parent and daughter cell remains. It takes place in almost all the cells (somatic cells) throughout the body.

Mitosis: The cell division in which the chromosome number gets halved in the daughter cell so that it can be restored on fertilisation is called mitosis. It is also called reduction decision. It takes place during formation of gametes.
