Z = Number of Valence electrons on central atom + (number of monovalent groups attached) - (charge with sign)

Now, divide Z by 2.

If z/2 =2 sp

z/2=3 sp2

z/2=4 sp3

z/2=5 sp3d

z/2=6 sp3d2

This works around 90% of the time.

So lets use this on XeF2

No. of valence electrons on central atom (Xe clearly) = 8

No. of monovalent groups (F) = 2

Charge = 0

Z = 8 + 2 - 0 = 10

Z/2 = 5

so hybridization = sp3d - this corresponds to a geometry of trigonal bi-pyramidal.

Hope this helps you ☺️☺️✌️✌️❤️❤️
