Concentrated hydrochloric acid dissolves many metals and forms oxidized metal chlorides and hydrogen gas. It also reacts with basic compounds such as calcium carbonate or copper(II) oxide, forming the dissolved chlorides that can be analyzed.

Hydrochloric acid dissolves many metals and forms oxidized metal chlorides and hydrogen gas. It also reacts with basic compound such as calcium carbonate or copper.

Reaction:

When an acid reacts with metal, a salt and hydrogen are produced: acid + metal → salt + hydrogen An example: nitric acid + calcium → calcium nitrate + hydrogen.
