This Mond process involves three steps for purification of Nickel.

1)  a mixture of hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas is added to the Nickel. In this reaction, an impure solid Nickel is formed.

2) pure Nickel present in the impure solid Nickel will readily react with carbon monoxide gas to form Nickel carbonyl gas.

3)Nickel carbonyl gas on heating decomposes to form pure Nickel and carbon monoxide.

This process is completed by use of a method called vapour phase refining.
