It is defined as the tendency of a body to remain in its position of rest.

Ex:- A person standing in a train falls backward when the train suddenly starts start moving forward. It depicts, when train moves, the lower part of his body begins to move along with the train while the upper part of his body continues to remain at rest due to inertia.

Inertia explains Newton’s first law of motion, which states that an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion unless it is acted on by an unbalanced force. That’s why Newton’s first law of motion is sometimes called the law of inertia.
