the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations and the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria

The ability to solve novel problems based on information one has just been presented with. Such problems being verbal, spatial, or nonverbal (depending if one makes a distinction between nonverbal and spatial).
