For coagulation basically two initial pathways are present that lead to the formation of fibrin. As coagulation is the clotting of blood caused by maturation of fibrin and activation of platelets. These two pathways are
1- Intrinsic pathway - Also called contact activation pathway.
2- Extrinsic pathway - Also known as tissue factor pathway.
Formerly it was thought that they both are equally important in blood clotting but extrinsic pathway is the primary pathway for blood coagulation. Intrinsic pathway is activated by the activation of XII factor that gives protection against thrombosis without bleeding risk. Whereas extrinsic pathway plays an important role in generating thrombin burst.
