i.e. first ionisation enthalpy of nitrogen is greater than oxygen. Ionisation potential is the amount of energyrequired ,expressed in electron volt per atom ,to remove most loosely bound electron from valence shell of isolated gaseous atom.

Anonymous: so,ionisation potential and enthalpy are same or different?
Anonymous: didnt quite get that.

Answer:

  • ionization enthalpy of an element is defined as  the amount of energy required to remove "the most loosely" electron from the outermostmost shell of it's isolated gaseous atom in the ground statelogens(Cl,F,Br etc.) and least for metals especially alkali metals (lithium, sodium, potassium etc..)
