the irony is that the poet faces multiple thoughts this means his voice of education told him if he is a man he should kill the snake

and also he afraid by the snake and also he feels happy that snake has came in his house to drink water

The irony in the poem is that although the poet is honoured to have encountered the lord of life and feels and strong inclination towards the snake, he still is not able to control himself, listens to the voices of his education and ultimately throws a log at it.
