Kulinism in hinduism:

  • Kulinism, in Hinduism, caste and marriage principles said to have been implemented by Raja VallalaSena of Bengal (1158–69).
  • The word kulina ("good family") comes from a Sanskrit name.
  • The top three castes is allowed to have hypergamy (marrying a wife from the lower caste).
  • They were split into 36 mels, or tribes, which did not inter-marry,— the Brahmen— members of the top Hindu castes.
  • Every Brahman member, according to particularly held lists, had to descend the same generation from a common ancestor.
  • This resulted in a deficit of accepted husbands in the top class and led to polygamy, with a husband having often 50 or more women, most of whom he neither saw nor held.
  • In the 19th century, the tradition was destroyed and is now obsolete.
